Victorian Antique Vintage Challis Maroon Stripe Wrapper Or Day Dress

Product Information

The wrapper, as the name suggests,  is a loosely fitting dress to give the Victorian housewife  easy movement while tending the to the duties of housekeeping.    Usually the fabric of these dresses were of a sturdy cloth that could withstand the rigors of household chores.  At the close of the 19th Century, the Victorian housewife,  still wearing her wrapper for cleaning duties, was also starting to wear a more fashionable / refined version during the day for at home entertaining.  Such as receiving guests for tea.  These dresses were known as tea wrappers.  The dress might be a princess style being more fitted or a dress cinched at the waist with ties.  Finer fabrics were used for the tea wrapper such as silk and usually embellished with some type of needlework, trimmiings or such.

Victorian Antique Vintage Challis Maroon Stripe Wrapper Dress

Dating from the late 19th Century Victorian era, a maroon stripe wrapper / house dress in a Challis fabric.  A very pretty fabric with the stripe of a geometric design in red and tan alternating with the solid maroon color.  Full straight front with opening partially down the front fastening with hook and eye.  Long full sleeves with buttoned cuff.

Interesting detail to the bottom of the dress with two rows of diagonal self bias fabric used to accent the skirt hem line.

A brown lining under bodice helps to support the dress in the upper portion.  The under bodice fastens with hook and eye.

Back of the dress is made in the princess style.

A tear or weakness of fabric near the one side of dress.  This measures about 2"  in length.  The only damage I noticed to the dress.

Measurements:  52" in length from the neck line to hem.  13" across from shoulder to shoulder. 32" bust.

A wonderful dress to display in a country primitive home setting.
