An original Civil War era cotton dress probably for a miss age 14 to 16 years of age. The dress is of a small pretty floral print on a tan and a dot background. Hook and eye fastening down the front to below the waist.
Narrow fitted waistband joining the gathered bodice and skirt with cartridge pleats. Bishop style sleeves and dropped shoulders. Yoke of the dress is separated from the remainder of the bodice with a ruffle. Ruffle also trims the front of the sleeve at the wrist with the back edge plain (no ruffle). Full ruffle also at the hem line.
As you notice from the side view of the dress the back is longer than the front so it has a slight train. Inside bodice is lined in muslin as is the hem of skirt. Dress has both machine and hand stitching.
Measurements: The length of the dress from the shoulder to the hem is 44" long. (front). From the center back to the hem is 47" long. Across the shoulders 14". Waist 22" around. Bust 27"around.
Condition: Considering the age of the dress I find it to be good, however, there is some damage to the front yoke near the neckline and one place near the shoulder (see photo). The fabric has become weak at this point and has shredded. Also the front waistband at the opening needs some mending (see photo). Some oxidation which again is normal. It is dots and small spots - nothing major.
I feel it is a wonderful dress and exceptional to find a dress for a young teenager.
