This heavy linsey woolsey quilt would definitely have been a source of warm on a cold winter night. And one has to wonder as to the placement of the pattern plus the wide border on just two sides if this might have been a quilt made from worn out quilts? The quilt is of a patchwork design. All the blocks are set on a diamond shape with most in colors of rust, brick red and brown.
Four blocks are pieced in a star design using the colors of yellow, rust, navy and brown. The wide 15" border on the connecting two sides are of a checked homespun in blue and yellow orche. The quilt is bound on three sides in the same brick red fabric found in the some of the blocks. The fourth side is bound in the homespun check fabric.
Although slightly varied in size the blocks measure about 11" square. (some of the blocks are pieced to make the 11" size) The batting is of wool. Backing is a coarse light yellow. Size is 87" x 78". Dating the quilt 1850's - 1860's. Condition: although very nice you will find a few small holes, a bit of fading and some staining which is certainly to be expected. This item will be shipped FedEx.
The quilt even has a couple of areas that have been darned as seen in the above photograph.
