Early 1900s Lovely Appenzell Embroidery Pair Button Pillowcase Shams With Cherub or Angel Motif
A lovely pair of linen Appenzell embroidery button back pillowcase shams. Cases are oblong with the buttons on the one end. Angelic figures of angels or cherubs along with flora decorated the lower half and two corners of the shams. A wide border is seperated with hem stitching from the main part of the shams. The back fastens with 5 buttons. A gorgeous pair from a trousseau and unused. Athough recently laundered to freshen. The back of one has a small line of about 1/2"long of oxidation that did not completely come out when cleaning. With a little more fussing I believe this area would completely come clean. However, it is the back side so may not matter. Size of shams: Overall size 26" x 35". The area a pillow would slip into is 19" wide x 27" long. Completely around the sham is the border edge measures 3-1/4". These are a delight to behold and I am sure would be a lovely treasure to own.
