A charming blue and white embroidery crib quilt from the early part of the 1900s - 1930s. More than likely it actually dates from 1915-1920.
The blue and white embroidery as well as the red and white (redwork, as they are called) embroidery quilts were very popular from the late 1880s until waning in popularity about the 1930s. Although the redwork quilts are found more often than the ones embroidered in blue, many of both are equal in quality.
This particular quilt is a extremely well done with many of the blocks featuring children's motifs. As you notice from the photographs there are Sunbonnet babes, animals, children in play and every day chores of life, just to name a few. One of the square is embroidered with the name of "Bob". I am sure a little boy named Bob did, indeed, enjoy this quilt.
And why won't he? Why wouldn't any child?
There are 30 blocks in the quilt with each block measures 7-1/4" square. Sashing between the blocks is the same fabric as the blocks and the back.
The quilt is bordered in a blue fabric measuring 3" wide. Overall size of the quilt is 62" wide x 74" long. It is all hand quilted with a variety of quilting stitches.
The blocks, themselves are quilted in small squares, while the sashing between blocks is quilted in a diamond shape. The outer sashing next to the blue border is quilted in series of scallop, circles etc. Beautiful precised and small quilting 11 stitches to the inch. Again, I want to stress the workmanship on this quilt is quite nice. Condition is very nice. I am sure it has been laundered within the last couple of years. I found no holes or repairs. A couple of small light oxidation marks from storage that did not completely come clean in the washing process. However, these are so slight . I found the quilt to be a real charmer and think you will also agree.
