Antique Pre Civil War Hand Ayrshire Lace Panel For Christening Gown

A magnificent fine lawn panel of Ayrshire lace dating pre Civil War. The beautiful needlework has been completed but the panel never made into, I believe, a Christening gown. One seam of the fabric has been joined to allow the Ayrshire lace to continue from the front to back of the skirt. This seam has been joined by hand stitching. Each of the two panels, before joining, would have been 36" wide from selvege to selvege. Attached to the side bottom edge by a few hand stitches is the Aryshire piece that would have been the fancy needle part of the front bodice of the dress. The needlework of this piece, too, is completed. Probably secured in this way so the two would not have become separated from each other. As I said, the Ayrshire lace is magnificent in pattern and design with soft curved scallop forming the hem line. The open work on both the curved scallop and stylized design is pulled thread work. I think you can see from the photos how lovely the work is. To give you an idea of the scale from the hem line, the widest point measures 10" tall. Now, the overall length of the fabric is 72" long x 25" wide. The bodice portion measures 6-1/2" long x 8 wide. One tiny hole near the seam line is all that I found ~ you will, also, find oxidation from many many years of storage.
