Product Information
A very nice mid Civil War era indigo blue and white geometric pattern hand woven center seamed overshot coverlet. The coverlet dates circa 1840's - 1860's.
~ ~ A tidbit of history ~ ~
The nice coverlet was handed down from one generation to the next then passed along to a son from his mother sometime in the 1930's. For the next 70 years or so the coverlet resided inside a steamer trunk with no one even taking a peek. As the man had recently passed on, the trunk was opened by the next of kin . Even though it had been a treasured family piece by the elders, the children had no interest so it was determined they wanted to sell and it was through a contact I was able to buy.
Now, I am offering this early coverelet directly from the estate for your consideration.
A 5" border pattern frames the two long sides of the coverlet with the top edge rolled over and handstitched.
A 7" border at the bottom of coverlet
No fringe nor was there ever any fringe. No maker's name.
Overall size is 70" wide x 96-1/2" long.
A view of the back of coverlet.
Condition is very nice although I did find a few small dots of oxidation storage marks. Also in the first close up photo you will notice a small round patch of the white that is missing the blue wool thread. This is about the size of a quarter.
I will also mention the full view photo of the coverlet looks to be "yellowed". I believe due to the flash of the camera. With the naked eye this doesn't happen to be so.
When held to the light I can also see a few frayed areas in the cloth but only visible when viewed this way.
I don't think this coverlet would disappoint and I don't know about you, but I appreciate any history that comes with a treasure of the past.
