Victorian women prided themselves on fine needlework – experts of sewing garments for their family or making household linens, they worked tirelessly.

Fancy stitching and embellishments might have been saved for the best of clothes but often time even everyday clothing and linens may have a few “extra” touches.

Even bed clothing would have shown extra care with the addition of tucks and trims. Such as this lady’s night dress featured. The deep yoke of the front of the gown features 50 narrow vertical tucks on either side of the front opening. Additional tucks decorates the edge of the sleeve. For you that have sewn tucks, you know it is not an easy task.

Fashions of Yesterday Can Be Fun Wearables Today

Some fashions of yesterday can be equally as fashionable today as then, such as this pretty 1890′s Victorian black net and ribbon cape.

The background of the cape is of netting with rows and rows of chiffon ribbon hand stitched to the ground. Alternating with the ribbon, a pretty woven trim gives a different dimension to the overall look. The hem line is then finished with a 6″ silk fringe that is, oh so pretty.

What a unique fashion statement this light airy wrap would be. Perfect for a gorgeous summer evening wear.

Recently I had the pleasure of purchasing a few lovely table linens from a dear friend. She had been collecting for a very long time, in fact, the years we had known each other was brought up in conversation. It was delightful to spend some time to reminisce.

A few of the table runners she brought were of lovely figural filet lace. The runners are from the early 1900′s, completely of filet lace or borders with linen centers. Very popular during this time period you will find themes of romantic and Roman classic as well as pretty flora.

Decadent Edwardian Antique Trim ~ Let Your Imagination Be Your Inspiration

A truly magnificent piece of French dress embellishment trim. Dating from the later teens into the early 1920′s, the trim in in unused condition.

The motif is partially woven open work ~ a silk or silk / rayon thread embroidered on net in a floral pattern. Cream flowers and scroll work are outlined in black thread, while the center of the flowers are encrusted with metallic gold thread.

Lovely Lace ~ Handmade Point de Gaz Collar

This intricate Point de Gaz collar would have been a fine choice for the finishing touch to a lady’s dress from the Victorian era. The handmade lace collar dates from the Civil War era so why not, again, wear it or admire.

Lovely wedding Shoes Of The 1840 To 1860 Era

These delicate wedding slippers were probably reserved for indoor wear, evening dress or special occasions. Dating from the early part of the 1800′s to 1860′s, the straight sole wedding shoes are in a cream silk satin. Beautifully hand stitched in small even stitches they are lined in linen The early ladies slipper shoes have rounded squared toes and straight leather flat bottom soles. Victorian Wasp Waist Warner Cincher Corset Girdle ~ Oh So Pretty

One name given waist cinchers of the late Victorian to early 1900′s was called a wasp. Certainly many waist cinchers of those day do resemble this flying insect with its tiny middle.

The pretty cincher, in the above photograph, was made by Warner and marked on inside of the cincher. Silk ribbon in a cream moire was used for the fabric. Heavily boned, both on the sides and back, it fastens down the front. Back lacing adjust the fit. A pair of garters attach to the front edge of the cincher secures the stockings. The Gatherings is pleased to offer a lovely pair of 19th century (1850′s – 1870′s) lace undersleeves. Made of handmade linen English Buckinghamshire (Bucks) bobbin lace in a classic pattern, the sleeves would be perfect for an reenactment clothing attire.

It is a fine example of a beautiful hood or bonnet from the 1860′s. The bonnet is in taffeta, completely handstitched. Ribbon is gathered along the outside edge for a gorgeous look. Lined in brown lining fabric.

Creative Sewing With Antique And Vintage Fabric And Sewing Notions

Do you like to sew? Or create new items from antique & vintage textiles? I am sure I would receive many “yes” answer to this question.

Today “creating from old” has developed into a sizable cottage industry. It has afforded many stay-at-home mothers a means of earning extra cash as well as launching others into a full time business. For a time, I have been on the outside edge of this industry as a supplier by finding and selling to these artisans to produce their wares. Many of these items produced are one of a kind. Most notably, in the past I worked with teddy bear artists. It was truly a joy to see their critters come alive ~ and I always marveled at the skill of their creation.

The making of teddy bears is only one small part of this large industry. Many others are skilled in the making of quilts, sewing reproduction era clothing for adults and children. The making of dolls and clothing is a category all of its own. The list is large as it is varied. I am sure many of you can add your own to this list.

So to whet the appetite here are a few antique and vintage treasures that could possibly find new uses.

A great turn of the century cotton fabric in a white with tiny black print. This type of design / fabric is called “neat” and was used mainly for aprons and everyday clothing. You will find fabric of this type used over and over again in quilts also. And it is always a “neat” little design to the fabric.

A fantastic old store find from the 1920′s! All these machine appliques are still attached to the cloth backing from the factory. The one and only shipping tag on the end of the backing cloth indicates these beauties were made in Switzerland.
