I always find it fun to collect hand made sewing items from the past. Items from the Victorian – early 1900’s interest me the most although there are some delightful pieces of more vintage that are equally as interesting. Most all are well made. So whatever sparks your fancy, may the joy of the hunt bring you great rewards.
Several years ago I purchased these Victorian needle cases and like many pieces stored them away for a time. So it was like a celebration to open the box to see, again, the beauty of these gems.

As I study each one I discovered each were different ~ same basic shape although different sizes ~ it was the fill stitches of the needle work in the middle of each of the rings that gave each case its unique design. Not only were the stitches on two cases different on the back from the front, one case is completely different.

Like a sampler of stitches.

The basic construction of the needle case was to start with a brass ring of which tight crochet stitches were added completely around the outside. Each ring was then stitched to the next ring to form the shape. The needle work fill stitches were added to the center of the rings to form the designs. In these particular cases two fine wool leaves were attached for storing the needles. Silk ribbon bows give a final accent.

1940 to 1950 Salfield The Three Bear Puzzle
Did this vintage 1940’s Saalfield picture puzzle ever bring back a rush of memories. It is the time period I grew up in and although I didn’t have this exact puzzle my sister and I had many other Salfield puzzles. Not only puzzles but books and other educational toys by this publisher were part of our everyday playthings. It is certainly fun to reminiscent.
This particular box contains three different Three Bears and Goldilocks puzzles. All complete and in very nice condition. Even the box, itself, shows only normal wear. A collectible not only for the Salfield or children vintage puzzle collector but to the collector of teddy bears this would be a “must have” treasure. Must have this puzzle? Just a click away under the category of toys.

For those of us who are in love with lace I feel it is safe to say we love it all. However, more than likely, each of us have a kindred spirit to one or two particular kind.
Although I can not state exactly why I am particularly fond of drawnwork or pulled thread, except to say it intrigues me. I guess it is the thought of pulling each of the threads from a piece of fabric to form an amazing design. Some work does seem incredibly complicated.
I recently purchased this lovely collar (which incidentally had been descension from a museum). The entire linen of the collar is completely covered with drawnwork. Hand knitted edging in two different styles finishes the collar.

Mid Victorian Drawnwork Collar
Dating from the middle of the 1800’s the lovely collar would be a perfect accompaniment to a re-enactment dress or other period costuming.
